Piano champion Evan Lin is preparing for international competition

Hawaii’s very own Piano champion Evan Lin is preparing for international competition and will probably take the world by storm. Just kidding, I’m sure there are many good piano players the world over and may the best man or woman win.

The 7th annual Aloha International Piano Festival brings together master players, students and enthusiasts for workshops and competition.

17-year-old Evan Lin is no stranger to the competitive piano world.  It was just three years ago his talent earned him an award in every single division at the festival.

“If I get really into it, there’s not much thinking going on.  It’s just feel the music.  You don’t really think about the notes,” Lin said.

The Punahou School student is about to enter his final year of high school.  Inside one of Hawaii Convention Center’s conference rooms Wednesday, Lin had the honor of having a one on one session with world class pianist Sara Buechner.

The award-winning musician is judging this year’s competition where Lin is up against 10 other pianists from Hawaii, Chicago and Japan.

“You’re looking for people who communicate.  The minute they come on stage and they start to play it’s like, ‘Oh wow! That’s just great.’ Music is just another way of telling the story,” Buechner said.

Buechner said Lin’s talent will take him far.  The young virtuoso started playing piano at age 6 and explained playing as a way to occupy his mind.

“I find enjoyment in it other than school and the busy stuff. I can just play piano and I enjoy it.  It’s a hobby of mine,” Lin said.Piano is a hobby among other interests.  Lin plays violin and guitar in his rock band Yellow Fever.  But for this week at least, his focus is on the black and white keys and bringing on his best.”It’s different every time, and you have to work just as hard each time to win but winning isn’t everything. It is nice though,” Lin said.

The Aloha International Piano Festival Concerto Competition is on Saturday June 23, from 9 a.m. through 12 p.m. at the Hawaii Convention Center.  Admission is free.
