Hawaii Officials Announce Dennis Esaki Day in Kaua‘i

Hawaii Officials Announce Dennis Esaki Day in Kaua‘i, which is most deserving for all the hard work and dedication he has given of himself throughout the years. It will be sad to see Mr. Esaki step down, but it is time for the page to turn once again and we are ready for a new representative to come forward.

In separate proclamations, Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie and Kaua‘i County Mayor Bernard P. Carvalho Jr. declared May 31 as Dennis Esaki Day, in recognition of the NRECA Hawaii director’s commitment and dedication to his community.

The actions came as Esaki stepped down from volunteering for the last one-and-a-half years as Abercrombie’s liaison on Kaua‘i.

“Dennis Esaki has a long-standing history as a community leader in Kaua‘i,” the governor’s proclamation said in part.

Also signed by Lt. Gov. Brian Schatz, it urged residents of the Aloha State “to join us in recognizing Mr. Esaki for his many contributions and outstanding service as the Governor’s Representative for Kaua‘i.”

“Dennis Esaki will be fondly remembered by the community for sharing his expertise and knowledge while he served as a representative of the Governor at the meetings and events,” the Kaua‘i County proclamation added.

Esaki has been on the national NRECA Board since 2006 and currently is chairman of the Marketing, Communications, and Business Development Committee.

“I am humbled and it has been an honor to be of service to the community,” Esaki said of the proclamations.

He is president of Esaki Surveying & Mapping, a company he started in 1979 and is chairman emeritus and one of the founding directors of Lihue-based Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative.

The motorcycle-riding Esaki has served on numerous boards and organizations, and, as the governor’s declaration noted, was named the Small Business Administration’s Small Business Person of the Year in Kaua‘i in 2003.

“Dennis is extremely deserving of this recognition,” said NRECA CEO Glenn English. “He has provided years of truly outstanding leadership to the electric cooperative movement and to his community.”

Added NRECA Board President Michael J. Guidry, “This recognition of his service to his people is indicative of his desire to make the world a better place and is indicative of his unselfish service to those all around him.”
