Hawaii disaster declaration is signed by President Obama

 

Hawaii disaster declaration is signed by President Obama and I’m glad that it was signed, sooner than later. At the beginning of March Kauai was hit hard during the last storm that came through and it did some major damage.

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The President today declared a major disaster exists in the State of Hawaii and ordered Federal aid to supplement state and local recovery efforts in the area affected by severe storms, flooding, and landslides during the period of March 3-11, 2012. 

“There are major storms occurring across the country, and I am grateful that our President recognizes that Hawai’i has also had its share of recent severe weather that has caused damage to our Counties,” stated Governor Neil Abercrombie.

The Presidential Disaster Declaration allows for assistance for emergency work and repair or replacement of public facilities on Kaua’i that received flood damage on March 3-11, 2012.   It also allows for a Hazard Mitigation Grant Program to assist all counties.

According to Hawai’i State Civil Defense, preliminary damage assessments identified approximately $2 million in damage to public infrastructure on Kaua’i, including $1.2 million in damage to roads.

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will be assisting local agencies in disaster recovery actions.

In March, Governor Abercrombie signed a State Disaster Emergency Proclamation and two Supplemental Disaster Proclamations after heavy rain, high winds and flooding affected the island chain causing damage to roads and properties.W. Craig Fugate, Administrator, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Department of Homeland Security, named Mark H. Armstrong as the Federal Coordinating Officer for federal recovery operations in the affected area. 

FEMA said additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the state and warranted by the results of further damage assessments.
