Hawaii Book & Music Festival Celebrated by Songwriter Showcase

The month of May is “Mele Mei” (Music May) and is celebrated throughout the month with Mele Mei events of Hawaiian music, hula and other musical activities.

To help kick off this month of music, this year’s Bank of Hawaii Presents the Hawaii Book and Music Festival will debut the first Songwriter Showcase with five outstanding Hawaiian singer/songwriters performing their original, new songs for Honolulu. The Showcase performances will take place at noon on Sunday, May 6 on the festival’s Main Stage at the Civic Grounds at Honolulu Hale.

The five featured artists are Roland Cazimero, John Cruz, Stephen Inglis, Walter Keale and Kenneth Makuakane, who, in partnership with Jerry Brocklehurst and the Kaua‘i Music Festival, organized the Songwriter Showcase.

The two-day Bank of Hawaii Presents the Hawaii Book & Music Festival takes place on Saturday and Sunday, May 5 and 6, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Admission is FREE and there is plenty of FREE PARKING in the nearby municipal lot.

The Bank of Hawaii Presents the Hawaii Book & Music Festival is a celebration of story-telling in all of its forms and encompasses eight pavilions and stages featuring 150 events with more than 500 local, national and international presenters and performers. They include such national authors as Maxine Hong Kingston, Julia Flynn Siler, Janny Scott and Kaui Hart Hemmings.  Author book-signings, story-telling, panel discussions on Native Hawaiian and humanities issues, the Bank of Hawaii Book Swap, and a multi-ethnic food court are all part of this annual event.

Together with title sponsor Bank of Hawaii, major sponsors of this year’s festival include the City and County of Honolulu Office of Economic Development, Hawai‘i Tourism Authority, Office of Hawaiian Affairs and the Hawai‘i Council for the Humanities. The festival beneficiaries are Hawaii Literacy and Read to Me International.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve enjoy singing whenever I heard one of my favorite Hawaiian songs played on the radio. I hope to see you all at the Hawaii Book & Music Festival Presented by Songwriter Showcase. I’ll be the one singing my heart and soul, right along with the best of the best…

~~Aloha Nui Loa
