Dalai Lama visits Hawaii and speaks to high school and college studentsThousands packed the Stan Sheriff Center Saturday, waiting for hours to hear a powerful speech by spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama.

His message to high school and college students in Manoa was simple: to encourage compassionate behavior.

Those in the audience enjoyed the pre-entertainment festivities, which included performances by Hyper Squad, Anuhea and Jack Johnson.

His Holiness entered while North Shore resident Johnson performed, and the crowd gave him a warm welcome.

The Dalai Lama says our life depends on hope and defines the meaning of happiness.

“Happiness not necessarily, just take the physical pleasure, sometimes even physical level – some suffering, some pain – can bring tremendous satisfaction on mental level,” said the Dalai Lama.

His visit to Hawaii marks the launch of a new initiative called “Pillars of Peace Hawaii”, which aims to bring global peace leaders to Hawaii. Even though the Dalai Lama promotes this way of life, he does say disagreements are normal.

“Of course there are disagreements, different interests. You can talk, listen with respect – they are right and consider, they’re also part of humanity,” he said.

The Nobel Peace Prize winner also stressed the significance of mental strength.

“When you passing through difficult period and some people criticize you, don’t disturb your mental sort of peace.”

Students say they were touched by his speech, and feel grateful they were there.

“And I really like the way he brought what he had to say in that sense of humility. It was really neat,” said a student.

“Not that we forget these things, but we lose sight of them, so it was a great reminder,” said another.

The spiritual leader will address the general public again at the Stan Sheriff Center Sunday.
