Performer to play single concert with The Coral Reefer Band on March 16

Parrothead alert: Jimmy Buffett is coming to Maui.

The performer of “Margaritaville” fame will be playing one concert on Maui with The Coral Reefer Band on March 16 at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center.

“He’s played here a few times, and he’s always been a crowd favorite and a sure sellout,” said Art Vento, Maui Arts & Cultural Center president and chief executive officer, on Monday. “It is the party that everyone looks forward to whenever he can make it to Maui.

“It’s the feel-good party everyone loves to come to.”

Buffett fans are known as “parrotheads” with their aloha shirts, slippers, board shorts – and margaritas. There is even a website to purchase “parrothead gear” for Buffett concerts including the “5 O’Clock State Of Mind Flag” and “Inflatable Palm Tree Cooler.”

“Quite the experience,” said Vento about the Buffett concert experience. “There is various head and tropical attire and inflatable beach balls and sharks.

It’s always unique and in the spirit of fun.

“It’s hard to explain. It has to be experienced.”

Vento’s recollection is that Buffett has played at the MACC twice – in 2003 and 2009. This time, his concert is advertised as the “Welcome to Fin Land Tour 2012.” Showtime is 7 p.m. in the A&B Amphitheater/Yokouchi Pavilion.

MACC members may purchase tickets from Friday beginning at 10 a.m. to Feb. 21; the public sale starts Feb. 22 at 10 a.m.

Tickets are $59, $89 and $136. They may be purchased at the MACC box office, with a credit card by phone at 242-7469 or on the website Ticket prices are subject to applicable fees.

This concert marks the 30th anniversary of Buffett’s first appearance in Hawaii. Buffett also has a concert in Honolulu on March 18 at the Waikiki Shell.

His most recent release, “Encores,” is a live acoustic double CD, featuring 22 of Buffett’s final encore songs, recorded in U.S. cities and Paris.

The 65-year-old musician, who has parlayed his musical success into a business success as well, “can decide where he wants to play” these days, said Vento.

“We are pleased and honored that we get to be a part of that world,” he said.

At his last concert on Maui, Buffett looked out at the 80 palm trees at the MACC and Haleakala, Vento recalled. When he takes his show to Sheboygan, Wis., and other nontropical places on the Mainland, he has to bring in palm trees, mountains and volcanoes for the stage.

“We can leave the props in the shop,” Buffett told the audience that night. “This is the real deal.”

“You look about, and you don’t need that here on Maui,” said Vento. “That’s what it is. That’s what we are living.”
